Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil was one of the biggest deals of the summer
and the Gunners are fortunate to have such a fantastic player.
World-class players are at a premium these days, but Arsenal has got one in their new £42.4million man.
Surprise
There seems to be major surprise throughout the football world that Real Madrid have decided to sell the Germany international.
Even Germany boss Joachim Low has expressed his surprise at the Spaniards parting company with the little playmaker.
I
must admit I was surprised when it was announced that Arsenal were in
talks to sign him for two reasons. The first reason being that I was
surprised that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would spend that much money,
especially on one player.
Always the economist the Frenchman is
definitely not accustomed to spending large sums of money, but he
smashed Arsenal’s club record fee to capture the Germany international.
The
second reason I was surprised was because he is so highly-regarded in
the Spanish capital by both fans and seemingly teammates. He has also
just come off the back of a superb season and his record of 47 assists
in his time at Real really is incredible.
The main reasons that
Ozil left Real in the end was Los Blancos’ need to create recoup some of
the money they spent on Gareth Bale and the plethora of midfield
options available to Real boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Marquee
Real’s
loss is Arsenal’s gain as Ozil really is a marquee player and they are
few and far between in today’s game. According to Spanish football
expert Guillem Balague, Ozil was also attracting the interest of
Premier League champions Manchester United.
Ozil was expecting
United to come in with a bid for his services before the window shut,
but it was Arsenal that put in an acceptable bid. I very highly doubt
that the Gunners will regret that it was their club who signed the
midfielder.
The signing of the former-Werder playmaker will
hopefully show the world that Arsenal does really mean business. His
signing will show top players that Arsenal are a club with ambition and
can sign big players.
Frustration
This summer has
been one of frustration for Arsenal fans when it has come to the
transfer market. I am sure that most Gunners fans are delighted with the
signing of the German midfielder. However, I am also sure that most
Arsenal fans know that Ozil will not cure all of all their team’s ills.
Improvement
The
signing of Mesut Ozil has to be the first step to Arsenal becoming a
major force in the Premier League once again. He is the sort of
world-class player that teams are built around, but Arsenal are still
lacking in a number of other areas.
Ozil is not a strong
centre-back, nor is he a defensive midfielder that shields the defence
from other teams attack. The Germany international is also not a
world-class striker, who will fire them to the Premier League title.
Unfortunate
It
really is unfortunate that the Gunners have not been able to keep hold
of some of the players that have left in recent years. Imagine an
Arsenal team with Cesc Fabregas, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla in
midfield and Robin van Persie up front, that would have been an awesome
prospect.
Exciting
The signing of Mesut Ozil is still
an exciting one. Arsenal now has one of the most exciting midfields in
the top-flight. Ozil lining-up alongside Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott
should be an exhilarating prospect for Arsenal fans.
I doubt that
many teams will look forward to playing Arsenal in the coming months.
The skill, intelligence and pace in the Arsenal midfield is enough to
give many opposition teams sleepless nights.
Start
The
important thing for Arsenal over the next few months is to improve as a
team and stay in the race at the top of the Premier League. However,
come January it is vital that Arsene Wenger manages to add more quality
to the team.
The signing of Mesut Ozil will give everybody
involved with the club a lift, but it is unlikely to inspire the Gunners
to be challengers for the Premier League title this season. The signing
of Ozil has to be the start of Arsenal rebuilding a truly quality team.
However,
if it not then Arsenal will stand still and the Ozil will become just
another top player, who becomes disenchanted in an Arsenal team that is
only capable of competing for a Champions League place.
