The Gunners manager is known to be looking to add a striker to his team in this summer’s transfer window, and has been linked with Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic and Queens Park Rangers’ Loic Remy.
However, it also emerged earlier today that Arsenal were considering a move for Rooney, who recently submitted a transfer request at Old Trafford following a difficult season.
The England star is now being linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs, after becoming unhappy with his role in this United team, often playing out of position and spending a lot of time this season on the bench in important games.
Rooney has tried to leave before, asking for a move in 2010, and he may now get his wish as he seeks an exit again. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea have been linked with the 27-year-old, but Wenger is not even convinced that the former Everton man will leave United this summer.
“I don’t know if Man United will sell Rooney, and that is the best sign to show you that we have not made any approach for him; the first thing is to phone Manchester United, which we did not do,” he told reporters.
Bayern Munich also recently ruled out a bid for Rooney.
