Everton maintained their unbeaten
start to the Premier League season and climbed into the top four with a
3-2 win over Newcastle United.
Sportsmail's Dominic King rounds up the night's action from Goodison Park.
There is no sense that Evertonians are
longing for their former manager, as the joke that was doing the rounds
before kick-off confirmed.
‘Well, it’s taken David Moyes 11 years,’ said one wag with a sense of glee. ‘But he’s finally managed to get Everton above Manchester United in the table!’
A rare omission from Roberto Martinez’s programme notes. The Everton manager has signed off every previous missive with the Spanish phrase ‘solo lo mejor’ which is literally translated as ‘only the best’, with respect to the club’s motto but, for some reason, the payoff line was absent on Monday night.
Come hail, rain or shine, Newcastle fans in the past used to fill out the away end of each ground they travelled to and make a huge din from first whistle to last. Perhaps it is a sign of the times but they have twice failed to get 50,000 for home games and didn’t come close to filling their away allocation at Goodison Park.
Duncan Ferguson sat in the stands sporting a huge smile. Ferguson was a striker for both these clubs but there is no question where his affinity lies. His delight at seeing Romelu Lukaku do what an Everton striker should do was obvious.
Meanwhile, Tim Howard must have been comparing notes with Brad Guzan. The Aston Villa man was the first goalkeeper to claim an assist this season when Andi Weimann ran on to his long punt for Aston Villa against Manchester City. Everton’s Howard set up Lukaku’s second goal with exactly the same ploy.

Turning their back: Newcastle fans have not been present in their usual numbers this season

Helping hand: Tim Howard provided the assist for Romelu Lukaku to score Everton's third goal
